BQ meet our MD with Director Murdo MacLeod

Founder and director of Zest Mixology Murdo MacLeod was interviewed on becoming an entrepreneur, MD and lead cocktail expert. 

• Describe your role in no more than 100 words.
My role is managing director of Zest Mixology. This includes taking care of strategic decisions and ensuring all the Zest Mixology team are on board with my vision to grow the company.

• What is it the company does?
Zest Mixology provides premium pop up cocktail bars, first class mixologists and bespoke drinks solutions that delight and excite.. To make events even more spectacular Zest Mixology supply provide a range of quality furniture to offer comfort and joy at events throughout UK & Europe.

• Give us a brief timeline of your career so far – where did you start, how did you move on?
I am originally from the Loch Ness in Scotland, from there I studied music management at Durham. After finishing my studies, I moved to London to work in Ministry of Sound’s advertising department. I then went on to work at Bacardi and as a result I later moved into senior training manager roles at Bombay Sapphire and Grey Goose. Finally I became the National Account Manager for Pepsi Co, where I was grateful to be awarded employee of the year award for significant business growth skills. From all these roles I have combined by experience and knowledge and embarked on my own entrepreneurial journey.

• What do you believe makes a great leader?
The ability to identify the different strengths within your team, nurture, showcase the dream and motivate people along the journey!

• What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?
Building the right team has been the biggest challenge to date

• How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?
Running! I stick on my running app, plug in my music and run away all the stresses of the day in the Yorkshire countryside

• When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to work in the music industry. At school in the late 90’s I had a passion for dance music, all things rave. I wanted to make it my work, hence the job at Ministry of Sound.

• Any pet hates in the workplace?
What do you do about them? Negativity, nobody is allowed to be a duck, they must come into work as a swan.

• Where do you see the company in five years’ time?
Next year we open a second warehouse operation to better service our nationwide clients, adding layers of management and permanently employing an ever increasing team of mixologists to deliver our events. Within five years we will be the go-to pop up bar supplier for all business conference and exhibitions throughout Europe.

• What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?
You can achieve absolutely ANYTHING if you put your mind to it!
